Opportunities exist in government agencies, non-profit organizations and financial consulting firms, as well, providing a wealth of versatile and rewarding career options.
Careers in accounting include, of course, working as an accountant—but also roles such as:
- Budget analyst
- Cost estimator
- Financial analyst
- Economist
- Financial manager
- Insurance underwriter
- Loan officer
- Management analyst
- Personal financial adviser
- Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agent
- Tax examiner

Depending on individual career goals, some accounting students decide to pursue the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential. However, for many accounting careers—such as roles in corporate accounting, financial analysis, internal auditing, management accounting and more—it may not be necessary.
To become a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), you must meet education, examination and experience requirements set by the state or U.S. territory in which you intend to practice. More information about CPA licensing is available on our accounting professional licensing page.
